Copper Foils Used for Making Stained GlassCopper foils are an essential stained glass supply for making stained glass.Without foil, stained glass pieces cannot be soldered together. ![]() Sizes of Foil Rolls of foil come in a variety of sizes. The widths range from 5/32" to 1/2". Thickness of foil range from 1.0 mil. to 1.5 mil. The back of the foil can be silver, copper or black. The standard width and thickness is 7/32" and 1.0 mil. Manufacturers of Foils A variety of manufacturers make copper foils. The choice of which manufacturer to use is a personal choice. I have used a variety of foils from different manufacturers with minimal noticeable differences. Choosing the Correct Foil When using transparent glass and/or bevels, you should choose a foil based on the color of your solder lines. If you plan to leave your solder lines silver, choose silver backed foil. If you are using copper patina, use copper backed foil. If black patina is your choice, then use black backed foil. Foil For Special Effects If you want a scalloped edge to your solder lines, foil rolls can be purchased with scalloped edges. Foil is also sold in sheets of 12" by 12". The sheets have an adhesive back which can be cut to unlimited shapes to create details and overlays for your stained glass project. |
