Zinc Framed Stained Glass

zinc saw

Adding a zinc frame to stained glass panels is essential. Framed stained glass will provide structure and rigidity.

Attaching a zinc frame on stained glass panels is an easy step when making stained glass.

Stained Glass Frame - Using Zinc Came

  1. Measure the length of came needed for each side.

  2. Decide if you want straight cuts or mitered cuts at the corners.

  3. Using a came saw, cut your zinc came to the length and angle you need. Initially, cut pieces long and then re-cut as necessary.

  4. zinc saw close up

  5. Once pieces are cut, insert glass into came channel and hold with T-pins. If using Handy Hangers, insert them into the came frame at this point.

  6. Flux the corners of the came and all solder lines that touch the frame.

  7. Using soldering iron, solder each of the joints.

  8. attach zinc frame

  9. Allow this side to cool. Carefully turn project over, flux and solder the joints on this side.

Attaching Hanging Rings to the Zinc Frame

attach zinc frame

  1. Apply flux to the ring.

  2. Next, apply flux to the area of the frame where ring will be located. (If stained glass panel is exceptionally wide, you should choose to attach hooks where the solder lines meet the frame, and not necessarily at the corners).

  3. Be sure to extend ring over the edge of the frame.

  4. Solder the ring to the frame.

Things to Remember

If you are adding an optional wooden frame to your panel, DO NOT use ring hooks or Handy Hangers.

After zinc frame is attached, be sure to use flux remover and remove all flux residue.

Your Piece Is Now Framed!

The next step is to patina and/or clean and polish
