Hanging Stained GlassChoosing the Right Hooks for Hanging Stained Glass
Hooks, for hanging stained glass frames, come in many different shapes, sizes and usages. There are hooks for hanging zinc frames, stained glass cabinet inserts, wood framed stained glass and sun catchers. Hooks For Zinc Frames There are basically three types of hooks for hanging stained glass when using zinc frames. There are came-framed Handy Hangers, glass clips and rings. The came-framed Handy Hangers look like an upside down exclamation point. These hooks are installed inside the zinc frame. Click here for instructions on installing Handy Hangers. This makes them an integral part of the zinc frame. They are usually purchased in packages of 5 pairs. Glass clips are made from clear polycarbon. They make the installation simple and secure. The clips create a one inch air space between the stained glass panel and the actual window to provide for air circulation. Clips are easily removed for cleaning your window. Rings, which are used for hanging stained glass panels, may be purchased in either brass or silver. They come in diameter sizes of 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2". These are sold either singularly or in quantity bags.
An alternative to purchasing these rings is to make your own. Using copper or silver wire, wrap it around a pencil or other object, to get the diameter you need. Then simply cut it, making a small circle. If you need stronger rings, using copper or silver wire, cut two to three lengths of wire and twist them together. The twisting can be accomplished easily by placing one end of the strands to a vice and the other into the chuck of a drill. Rotate slowly until desired amount of twisting is completed. Wrap around a pencil or other object and cut all strands. These clips secure your inserts to the cabinet door. They are made from clear polycarbon with UV inhibitor, sold in packages of 25 clips, all with screws. Retaining buttons offer a simple and secure way of attaching your stained glass cabinet inserts to a cabinet door already rabbeted out. The retaining button head extends over the edge of the rabbet, thus tightening the stained glass insert to the frame of the door. These buttons can be unscrewed if you choose to remove your glass panel. Sold in packages of 10 buttons with screws. When placing hooks on wood frame, attach to the side of the wood frame which eliminates stress that can cause the top of stained glass frames to bow.
Panel roll hooks are brass plated hooks which again attach to the sides of the wood frame. Usually sold in pairs, with 8 screws included for secure mounting. Side mount hooks are brass plated hooks screwed to the vertical side of the wood frame. Sold in packages of 1 to 25 pairs. There are two ways to hang suncatchers. You can use rings or hanging wire and connectors. These are the same type rings as mentioned above. Suction cups are handy for hanging suncatchers and other glass directly on the window panes. They are available in packages of 10 - 100. Connector loops are attached directly to suncatchers.
