Large Vertical Patterns

by Nancy
(Tulsa)

I have done a few stained glass pieces before, the largest being approx. 52" wide x 12" high,...horizontal. Now I am planning to create a new one that is 23" wide x 70" tall,...very vertical. Is there anything I need to consider in my design, that is, do I need to brace it somehow? If so, how? Anything else I need to consider?

Possible solution from Creativity-in-Glass.

Make sure your design does not have long vertical lines as these will become areas that will cause bowing and possible breakage. If you must use vertical lines, either use rebar to enforce those lines or with the foiling method you can use copper re-enforcing strip, placed between the foiled glass pieces which will give additional support for a piece of this size.
