Ways to Organize Glass

Organize Glass
Makes It Easy to Find and Use

Reasons to Organize Glass

As you set up your stained glass workshop, storing your glass can quickly become an issue.

It doesn't take long before you have glass scraps and extra glass sheets.

If you put glass collectively in a box, it can become difficult to find the piece you are looking for or even knowing what you have.

Glass Sheets

glass bin For sheets of glass we have found using glass bins helpful to organize glass and for storage.

The glass bins are made with divided sections that allow you to organize the glass by color, texture or type.

Directions for Making Glass Bins

Supplies

1/2 "plywwod or pressed wood

1/8" wide paneling or other similar material

wood glue

nails and or screws

Cutting and Assembling

  • Determine the size of the bin you need

  • Using 1/2" thick plywood or pressed wood cut the top, bottom and sides

  • Cut dividers the height of your bin (it needs to be at least 12")

  • To determine the number of dividers you will need take the over all length of the bin and divide by 2

  • On the top and bottom pieces for your bin, you will need to cut grooves to hold dividers

  • These groves should be the width of the thickness of the divider board

  • Assemble box, then insert dividers

Scrap Glass

glass bins Scrap glass is an area of your shop that will quickly multiply.

Just putting scraps in a box, will usually result in them rarely being used.

After many trials and errors in our organization of scrap glass, a system of small plastic basket bins seems to work best.

Each small basket has scraps from the same original piece of glass. That way we know at a glance if there is enough scrap for the project we are working on.

With cost of glass, you don't want to throw out what can be used. Therefore organize those scraps!
