Patina Tips and Techniques

Do gloves have to be worn while applying patina?

  • One of the more important patina tips is wearing rubber gloves. They are needed to keep the acid in patinas from burning your skin. They will also keep your hands clean.
  • What can I use to apply patina?

  • Apply patina with Q-tips. Time will be saved by not having to clean patina off of the glass.
  • Use woman's make-up wedges to apply patina.
  • Patina appears spotty?

  • Use .0000 steel wool to clean the zinc frame, then rinse and re-apply patina.
  • Finish is blotchy?

  • Use a cotton ball with a little rubbing alcohol on the spot and then re-apply the patina.
  • How to prevent oxidation from forming?

  • The simplest way to prevent oxidation is to clean the project and apply patina immediately after project is soldered.
