Soldering Tips and Techniques

Soldering Tips to Help You

Solder spits and sputters?
  • You may be using too much flux.

Neater solder lines?
  • Avoid starting or stopping iron at joints and intersections.

Lines flat?
  • Flat lines can be caused by moving too quickly or not using enough solder.

Solder bulges?
  • Moving too slowly or using too much solder. To remove bulges, clean the tip of the iron, place on the bulge, then pull the excess onto the glass.

Peaks in solder?
  • The iron was not hot enough.

Solder seeps through to other side?
  • The iron was too hot.

Copper foil lifts up when soldering?
  • This could be caused by the iron being too hot, not moving fast enough, too much flux or a bad foiling job.

What can be used for a soldering board?
  • Use ceiling tiles for soldering as well as for pattern layout.

How to stop solder from adhering to box hinge?
  • Use white-out where you don't want solder to adhere.
