Stained Glass SuppliesBefore you can begin your stained glass project, you will need to have some basic stained glass supplies. .
Chemicals and Solutions![]() Various chemicals and solutions are needed to prolong tool life, for assembly and for finishing stained glass projects. You have invested money for your tools, now you need to take care of them to make them last. Coolant is used with both the grinder and the glass saw. An anti-seize lubricant is required for the grinder. Flux and Flux Remover Flux is used to allow solder to adhere to the copper foil. Flux remover removes the flux residue from the solder. Not using a flux remover can cause your piece to corrode and/or oxidize. To finish your stained glass project, you will use these stained glass supplies. Patinas Patinas are used to color or darken the solder lines. Patina is not used when you want your piece to retain its silver quality. Polish and Finishing Compound Polish and/or finishing compound will remove tarnish or residue from your solder lines while giving the glass, solder and came a nice luster. Copper Foil![]() Copper foiling requires copper foil, which comes in various sizes and types. The purpose of copper foil is to allow solder to adhere, which in turn holds together the individual pieces of glass. Check out Types of Copper Foils to help you choose the correct copper foil. Solder![]() Solder comes in a variety of mixed alloy ratios; which basically determines the overall look, melting point and price. A ratio of 60/40 seems to work best. There is a lead free solder, but it is considerably more expensive. Check out Types of Solder to help you choose the correct solder. Metal Came Frames![]() Wooden stained glass frames can be an additional frame for your piece, but first you need a metal came frame. Metal came is used for structural support and reinforcement of borders. Metal came comes in zinc, brass and copper and comes in various sizes. For framing, I use Adj.U came. On small projects, I use 1/4" and for larger projects I use 3/8" or 1/2" metal came. Check out Types of Metal Came to help you choose the correct came for framing you stained glass art work. Stained Glass Hooks![]() To hang your art work, you will need stained glass hooks. These hooks can be purchased or made from wire. Check out Types of Stained Glass Hooks to learn about the different types of hooks and how to make your own hooks.
